The swimming is great here, the mosquitoes weren't that bad, there was some privacy, but I felt like we were making the best of an apocalyptic scene- felled trees, burns, smoke and ash from current fires.

For me it's hard to come to terms with -but hey, you may like it. Everything to Duffy Lake is clear. We managed through the latter on the way to Santiam and on the way back corrected our mistake and took the former- so much nicer. There were about 5 other groups camping around the lake from what we could tell, but we felt like we had privacy.

Bugs were present at Santiam in the evening! Late July Great trail. Lots and lots of blowdown, especially past Mowich; lots of maintenance needed to clear the trail. Wide variety of scenery, from pristine to burned landscapes. Trails are very dusty due to lack of rain. Saw just a few people Wednesday through Friday, then tons of people Saturday.

Lakes are very warm and water level is low, but still made great swimming. If you are wondering, there is NOT a trail that circles Mowich.. Forest service is checking permits. Trails are dusty, streams are dry and lake levels are low, but swimming was still great. Lots of delays on highway 22 due to burned tree removal. Fantastic trail to two beautiful lakes!

It took us about 4 hours of hiking, not including stops at the lakes. Trail conditions: the trail is completely clear of tree fall up to Duffy Lake and mostly clear now through to Santiam Lake. The river crossing below Duffy is dry a big difference from when we hiked this just 6 weeks ago. We passed hikers coming back from Mowich who said there's still a lot of tree fall on that trail. The meadow just past Duffy on the way to Santiam still has a lot of beautiful wildflowers.

There are still a lot of mosquitoes, mostly in the meadow and along the trail to Santiam Lake. It's not that bad at Duffy. We saw only a few people hiking up but passed a lot of backpackers coming into on our way back down. Perfect day weather wise, warm but not hot, slight breeze, wispy clouds for great photos, zero snow but dusty trail, way too many downed trees on way to Santiam Lake tho darnit.

Very few mosquitos until later in the day 5ish. I was the only one at the lake the whole time I was there, only about 2 or 3 small groups arrives as I was leaving. July 25, Susan from Salem. Easy, meandering trail through some beautiful forest. Pretty dusty, just a few mosquitos and very few people. Pleasant hike to a nice lake. Mosquitos were low until the 15 minutes at dusk where they got a bit aggressive.

Lake was pretty warm - lots of people going for a dip. Some blowdown near the lake, especially the eastern end, but getting to the lake was clear, albeit a bit dusty. Lovely time, plenty of flowers and birds still especially in meadow at the east end of the lake. No jaw-dropping views but a solid adventure. Trail to the lake is clear, and water at the North Santiam River crossing is only a trickle. The mosquitoes are still partying my head net worked well , although they died down in the early-afternoon heat.

Walking clockwise to the left around Duffy Lake yields a great view of the lake with Three Fingered Jack not as good as that at Santiam Lake -- but close. Among the wildflowers in bloom: bunchberry, cat's ear, Columbine at the river crossing , lupin, phlox, windflower, a single stem of beargrass and a fading Cascade lily near the lake.

On this sunny Wednesday encountered nine other people on the trail. Water temps are perfect for cooling off. Trail is clear of downed trees from the trailhead to the junction with the Lava Lakes trail. Mosquitoes a nuisance.

In late June the trail was in great shape except for scores of trees blown down across it. When we were heading out we met a trail maintenance team clearing the trees off. It should be nice and clear now. Be warned, mosquitoes were fierce around the lakes. Mosquitos are terrible, bring bug spray or lotion. Also be prepared to channel your inner Alice as there are a few trees down to crawl under to continue along the trail. Other than those two obstacles, it is a beautiful hike where your spirit and soul feel refreshed.

The woods are magical, the water amazing…. But other than that it was fantastic easy hike. The crossing of streams was fun until you were swarmed with mosquitos.

Beautiful lake! Took a nice dip in today. Mosquitoes are aggressive. Downed trees on the trail as others have mentioned. The trail is mostly clear of snow, but like others said there are trees you will need to go around. Snow melting very quickly. Tried the trail to Santiam Lake but it has so many downed trees it is pretty impassable and will most likely take a long time to off trail it to the lake. Trail to Mowich has a bit of snow but the trail is still easy to find. Mosquitoes are in full force, and there was pollen blowing off the trees like fog.

Early for fly fishing at Duffy, we had no luck getting them to take any fly. We even packed in a raft and tried off shore with no luck. Perhaps a spinner rod until later in the season. Remember there are no fires allowed at Duffy lake although every camp site has a fire ring. The lake was beautiful, enjoyed the hike into Mowich as well! Not much snow towards Duffy but quite a bit when heading out to Mowich.

My husband goes every year so it was fun for him to take the whole family! Great experience. Love this hike! The trail is in need of some TLC. There are a lot of fallen trees, as others have mentioned, with the worst being a series of trees blocking the trail at mile 1. The river was a little over ankle-deep today. The logs were not submerged but were slippery so we put on our water shoes and waded - really easy.

The wildflowers trillium are just starting to bloom. We encountered only two other groups on this cold, wet Thursday.
